Mumbai Battles Monsoon Fury: Heavy Rains Cause Disruptions, Relief Efforts Underway (as of July 22nd, 2024)

Monsoon Heavy monsoon rains lashed Mumbai on Sunday, July 21st, 2024, causing significant disruptions across the city. Within a 12-hour period ending at 8 PM, the city received over 100 mm of rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several areas, impacting local train services, and causing the diversion of flights.

City Streets Submerged, Traffic Snarls Ensue

The heavy downpour resulted in waterlogging on various roads, making them impassable for vehicles. Areas like Sion, Chembur, Hindmata, and Kurla were particularly affected. Public transport, including buses and private vehicles, faced difficulties navigating the flooded streets, leading to significant traffic congestion across the city.

Local Trains Partially Affected

Monsoon Local train services, the lifeline of Mumbai, were partially disrupted due to waterlogging on the Central Railway section between Dadar and Matunga stations. While services on the Western Railway section remained largely unaffected, delays of 15-20 minutes were reported on the Harbour Line near Mankhurd, Panvel, and Kurla stations.

Flights Diverted, Airport Operations Briefly Halted

The heavy rains also impacted air travel in Mumbai. A total of 36 flights were cancelled at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Additionally, 15 flights operated by airlines like Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa were diverted to nearby airports, primarily Ahmedabad, until 4 PM. Disruptions extended to the airport itself, with heavy rain forcing the temporary suspension of runway operations twice during the day.

Relief Efforts Underway

Monsoon The heavy rainfall prompted the Maharashtra government to take immediate action. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde issued a high alert, directing the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local administration, and police to implement relief plans. Teams were deployed to assist stranded citizens and clear waterlogged areas.

Weather Forecast for Mumbai

The good news is that the heavy rain seems to have subsided for now. However, weather experts are predicting further downpours throughout the week. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
